The Alabama quarterback competition may have a clear favorite soon. In fact, the Crimson Tide’s first scrimmage potentially already created one.

On Saturday, Tua Tagovailoa threw three touchdowns and had no interceptions while Jalen Hurts had three interceptions and accounted for no touchdowns, according to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz. Alabama doesn’t allow media to watch scrimmages, but reporters receive some information.

Tagovailoa’s first touchdown pass went to sophomore wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. He later threw touchdown passes to freshman wide receiver Tyrell Shavers and sophomore tight end Kedrick James.

However, even after Tagovailoa’s impressive performance — and Hurts’ less than stellar one — Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban stayed neutral and reiterated comments regarding the quarterback competition similar to the ones he’s made throughout camp.

“We’re going to evaluate the quarterback situation,” Alabama coach Nick Saban told the media after the first of his team’s two scrimmages this preseason. “We’re going to keep looking at the guys. What somebody did today or didn’t do today is not going to win or lose him the job. It’s going to be a cumulative effect and the consistency that they practice with and play with the whole time. And that’s in fairness to both players, who are really good competitors and really working hard and really doing a good job. So we don’t have much more to say than that.”

Hurts, a junior, has started for Alabama the past two seasons, including last year, when he led the Tide to the College Football Playoff. However, he was replaced by Tagovailoa, who is now a sophomore, during the second half of the National Championship Game against Georgia. Tagovailoa led Alabama to victory with an overtime touchdown pass, sparking an offseason filled with discussion of the quarterback controversy.
