Alabama landed Buchner in the transfer portal earlier in the offseason. He’s expected to compete for the starting job alongside Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson this summer.

Buchner is reuniting with new Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Buchner and Rees spent the past couple seasons together at Notre Dame. Buchner won the Irish’s starting QB job out of camp last year, but suffered a shoulder injury in Week 3 that caused him to miss the majority of the 2023 campaign.

Other players who have worn No. 8 at Alabama include receiver Julio Jones and running back Josh Jacobs.

Buchner wore No. 12 at Notre Dame. He played in 3 games last season and threw for 651 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for 4 more scores on the ground.
