There’s no question that Tua Tagovailoa’s talents have unlocked a new aspect of Alabama’s usual ground-and-pound offense.

But there is still some debate about whether Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban truly likes it that way.

On Fox Sports 1’s “Lock It In,” analysts Clay Travis and Joel Klatt took differing stances on that subject. Travis called Tagovailoa a “cheat code” for talent-rich Alabama, but Klatt doesn’t think the sophomore’s playing style fits what Saban wants to do.

For all the Crimson Tide’s success under Saban, Tagovailoa might be the best pure passer of his tenure at the school. But his high upside and explosiveness don’t seem to fit the mold of what Saban likes to do — controlling the clock, dominating field position and wearing opponents down with a strong running game.

Hurts, who has rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and thrown just 10 interceptions in a little more than two seasons, appears to better suit the style of play Saban prefers.

Whether Saban truly enjoys a more wide-open offense likely doesn’t matter to him as long as Alabama keeps winning.
