Arkansas running game shined Saturday during the first spring scrimmage.

Devwah Whaley (45-yard TD run) and Chase Hayden (25-yard TD run) both broke off long TD runs, and that’s big news, because the depth is really thin at the position. Rakeem Boyd is out this spring recovering from a shoulder surgery.

Following the scrimmage, offensive coordinator Joe Craddock shared his thoughts.

“I thought those guys did a good job of being patient and hitting it,” Craddock said after the scrimmage about his two running backs. “I thought our O-line did a good job of blocking. I probably could have scored on two of those. They were just big holes. I thought our offensive line, again from the field, I’ll have to go back and watch it, but I thought those guys did a nice job and opened up some holes for those guys to run through. But those guys did a nice job of finding it and going and score.”

Boyd led the Hogs with 734 yards and two TDs, and once he returns, the trio of Boyd, Whaley and Hayden could be one of the best in the SEC. The Hogs depth will get a boost this fall as Arizona State RB Trelon Smith will join the team (he’ll be eligible in 2020) and newcomer A’Montae Spivey will be on campus.

Defensive coordinator John Chavis also spoke to the media Saturday.

“Defensively, we surely didn’t start it the way you want to start a ballgame,” Chavis said. “I’m glad it was a scrimmage. We had a miscue on the first play and then I don’t know what happened on the next play, but we gave up two long runs. Those are things that we have to eliminate if we ever want to become a good defensive football team.”
