The monkey seems to get heavier with each passing game.

There have been some very unsuccessful coaches during the 82-year history of the Southeastern Conference. However, the winless streak Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema has endured throughout his one and a half seasons in Fayetteville is unprecedented.

A season-opening loss at Auburn after being tied at halftime … 0-9. An overtime loss to Texas A&M … 0-10. A one-point loss to Alabama … 0-11. A 13-point loss to Georgia … 0-12. A seven-point defeat at the hands of No. 1 Mississippi State … 0-13.

With LSU, Ole Miss and Missouri left on its schedule, Arkansas could be on its way to 0-16 in SEC play during Bielema’s tenure.

At some point, the mental burden becomes too strong. Only after so many losses can Bielema continue to tell his team that it’s close. Players can hear they can compete with top-tier teams, but not beat them for only so long without the message taking a toll.

Bielema and Razorback players can continue to say all the right things, but the pressure mounts with each loss.

Previous SEC head coaches have had prolonged goose eggs in the loss column, but none as long as Bielema.

Jennings Whitworth lost nine straight conference games at Alabama from 1955-1957. Earl Brown lost 10 consecutive SEC games at Auburn from 1948-1950. Watson Brown lost 10 consecutive SEC contests at Vanderbilt from 1986-1987, and Derek Dooley lost five straight conference games at Tennessee from 2010-2012.

Bielema’s winless streak in SEC play isn’t just surprising, it’s historic.

The former Wisconsin coach who won three straight Big Ten championships in Madison took over an Arkansas program left in shambles by Bobby Petrino and the unfortunate tenure of John L. Smith.

Bielema brought a complete shift in philosophy and had to start from scratch on the recruiting trail. All the while, the Razorbacks’ neighboring counterparts in the state of Mississippi are surging, and well, somebody has to come in last in the SEC West.

Like it or not, Bielema’s seat will grow warmer as he will join the ranks of worst records in SEC play in recent conference history.

Former Kentucky coach Joker Phillips won just four conference games from 2010-2012. Former Ole Miss head coach Ed Orgeron was unsuccessful in SEC play, winning just three games in three seasons in Oxford. Former Mississippi State coach Rockey Felker won only five conference games in five seasons.

After the public relations nightmare the program went through after Petrino’s scandal and Smith’s tenure, Bielema’s time in northwest Arkansas is becoming notable for all of the reasons director of athletics Jeff Long doesn’t want.

For Bielema and Arkansas fans during the Hogs’ final three games, you close your eyes, look up when the clock hits zero and hope you’re on the winning side.

If not, that monkey may become too heavy to carry. Even for Bielema.
