Arkansas is closing in on its game week by holding some of its last dress rehearsals in the steamy afternoon heat.

Coach Chad Morris on Saturday said the team held a scrimmage that was pass-heavy and resulted in some turnovers, but the quarterback competition didn’t yield much new information.

The coaching staff started Cole Kelley in an attempt to split time between he and Ty Storey, who started last week’s workout. Morris said the team ran 140 plays and it was the first time to get a feel for a game-like atmosphere with things like coaches in the press box. Others in the competition include freshmen Daulton Hyatt, Connor Noland and John Stephen Jones.

Perhaps something that complicated the decision was there were breakdowns in pass protection, Morris said.

“I don’t think coming straight out of the scrimmage you just say one guy stood out or didn’t do as well as we thought,” Morris said. “I mean there wasn’t anything in there to say he had a great day or a bad day. I think they were pretty consistent today and I was pleased to see that with all of them today.”

Morris admitted he’d like to make the quarterback decision ahead of the first game week so that the players, staff and everyone knows.

“We’re going to go up there and evaluate and sit down and talk and kind of go back and look and visit and have discussions and see how this week goes,” he said. “I really don’t have like a, ‘I have to have it done by Friday at 2:00.’ I haven’t done that. Obviously we want to be able to get in there and get things going for our game week preparation, so everybody can know.”

Arkansas will hold its final scrimmage next Saturday before it opens the season against Eastern Illinois.
