Here’s a couple of quick thoughts on Arkansas blowout and record-setting victory over Nicholls State, snapping the Hogs’ 10-game losing streak.

What it means: It’s tough to say that this game showed a lot for the Hogs due to the significant talent differential. However, it’s encouraging for Razorbacks fans that the team’s first-string dominated all game. The big plays played a huge role in the win. Quarterback Brandon Allen completed four passes, all of which ended up in touchdowns. Overall, the starters looked very strong with a Texas Tech match-up looming next week.

What I liked: Keon Hatcher’s had a big day for the Hogs. After a tough outing against Auburn where the junior wide out dropped a couple of passes, he bounced back strong this afternoon. He only touched the ball twice, but his two touches resulted in 132 total yards and two touchdowns. His big-plays will be something the Hogs need throughout the season.

Who’s the man: Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins share the “man” honors for the Hogs tonight. The two combined for 274 rushing yards and four touchdowns. It was obvious from the beginning that these two workhorses would overwhelm the Nicholls State defense and they didn’t disappoint. Williams’ 90-yard touchdown run was dazzling and Collins gashed the Nicholls State defense for 131 yards and 13 carries.

Key play: The wide receiver reverse to begin the game signaled just how big of a blowout this game was going to be. Wide receiver Keon Hatcher took the reverse off a fake handoff to Alex Collins from Brandon Allen and the junior wide out didn’t have anyone seemingly within 10 yards of him. The 80-yard touchdown run by Hatcher was only the beginning of Arkansas’ 73-7 rout over Nicholls State.

What’s next: In what will be a crucial game for Arkansas, the Razorbacks travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech in a non-conference clash. The Hogs are very much improved from a year ago and a win against the Red Raiders would be Bret Bielema’s biggest win as the Arkansas head coach. A win also greatly increases the chances of the Hogs reaching a bowl game this season. Today’s offensive output should establish some confidence in Allen and others heading into that game.
