Punt returns are tough plays in today’s game. For example, if a tackler doesn’t see a fair-catch call, he could get flagged for hitting the returner.

North Texas took advantage of that hesitation on Saturday against Arkansas, not calling for a fair catch but acting like it did.

As you can see in the video below, the returner fields the punt surrounded by Razorbacks. But, instead of making an immediate move, he casually walks past the Hog defenders. Then, he turns on the jets and sprints untouched to the end zone:

Obviously, that’s embarrassing for the Hogs, but it’s difficult to tell if the returner called a fair catch or not. It’s sometimes better to be safe than sorry, but the refs clearly didn’t blow the whistle.

No matter whose fault that mishap was, coach Chad Morris certainly won’t be happy about it.
