The Auburn quarterback decision is likely headed toward TJ Finley being named the starter, but Auburn radio voice Andy Burcham offered a wrinkle about how the QBs will add a wrinkle to the offense.

Speaking as a guest on the “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” show on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama, Burcham said another quarterback is more of an unknown to the offense.

“We’re all waiting to hear that in all likelihood it’s going to be TJ Finley that will get the start against Mercer,” Burcham said. “But I think, and I don’t know if we’ll learn this from Bryan Harsin this week or we’ll find out in Game 1 against Mercer, just how much Robby Ashford figures into the offense, even if he’s not the starting quarterback. He’s the best two-way threat or dual threat that Auburn has in the quarterback room, and I think he’s gone the furthest since he came on campus in January.”

“I’m anxious to see what kind of packages we see for Robby Ashford,” Burcham said.

Greg McElroy opened a question about where Finley has improved, since he had a leg injury during the Alabama game.

“Does he have more mobility than we thought,” McElroy asked.

Burcham said, “I think, one, he’s had a chance to establish some leadership in the quarterback room and with the offense, and Greg, you know how important that is with the team, and he’s now been with this program for a year to establish himself in the quarterback room. I think he’s more accurate, and I think he’s more of that starting quarterback than he was.”
