There’s a new candidate for the Auburn head coaching job.

John Brice of FootballScoop reports that UAB head coach Bill Clark has emerged as “someone of significant interest.”

UAB won the Conference USA championship on Friday night with a 22-13 win over Marshall to improve to 6-3 on the season. After the game, Clark was asked by reporters if he has been contacted by Auburn.

“I won’t comment on that other than to say, like I told you before, I love UAB,” Clark said. “This is mine, and we built it together. But it’s always good to be thought of, and that’s my job in this business to win games. And when that happens, I think people see that. So, you know, we’ll just see what happens, but I love my players and love UAB.”

Brice reports: “Sources confirmed to FootballScoop Saturday night that there had been contact between Clark and the Auburn search committee/firm.”

Earlier in the week, ESPN analyst Trevor Matich shared that Clark would be his top choice for the Auburn job. Clark joins a growing pool of candidates. Interim head coach Kevin Steele was recently described as the favorite to land the job. It was reported that Auburn plans to interview Alabama offensive Steve Sarkisian and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier. Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott was linked to the job but stated he has no plans to interview.

Clark is 51-26 as a head coach with an 11-4 season at Jacksonville State in 2013 and a 39-22 mark with UAB. His five-season tenure was interrupted by UAB’s two-year shutdown. After a 6-6 season in 2014, Clark led UAB to an 8-5 mark in 2017. The Blazers followed that up with an 11-3 campaign and Boca Raton Bowl win in 2018. UAB went 9-5 in 2019, falling in the New Orleans Bowl.
