Auburn commit and Madison Academy star Kerryon Johnson will remember Thursday, Dec. 4 for a long time to come.

The four-star athlete was named Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year Thursday morning, prior to his team’s appearance in its third straight state championship game.

Johnson — a 6-foot-1, 200-pound running back for the Mustangs — has rushed for 1,477 yards and 21 touchdowns while leading Madison Academy to a 13-1 record. The senior is a threat to catch the football out of the backfield, recording 24 receptions for 532 yards and seven touchdowns. Johnson has intercepted five passes on defense, and blocked four punts, two of which he’s returned for scores.

In Thursday’s 3A state championship game, Johnson’s Mustangs scored 70 points — an Alabama all-classification record — behind his record-setting performance. Johnson racked up 278 total yards on 10 touches, and scored five offensive touchdowns and returned an inteception for a touchdown.

His six total touchdowns is an all-classification record.
