Bo Nix could use some help from his wide receivers.

After the Tigers mowed through two cupcakes in games that should have answered most of Auburn’s questions heading into the meat of the 2021 schedule, one still hangs precariously over their heads: Who is Nix’s go-to guy?

Shedrick Jackson looked like he might be the one after opening the season with 5 catches for 79 yards in a 61-10 victory over Akron. Jackson is a senior and one would assume that with his experience that he would step forward to lead the group.

But a new candidate emerged on Saturday in a 62-0 victory over FCS Alabama State. Demetris Robertson, also a senior, is a versatile talent who can house it whether he’s catching a Nix pass or running with the ball from scrimmage. Robertson was that leader who stepped up big on Saturday. Robertson caught 3 passes, enough to lead the Tigers receiving corps. Two of those went for touchdowns.

Robertson scored Auburn’s first 3 TDs, the first on a 6-yard pass from Nix, who looked to Robertson again for a 28-yard touchdown pass.

But Robertson flashed his talent for escaping when he took a reverse and dashed 36 yards for another score as the Tigers piled on, extending a 19-0 halftime lead with a school-record 35-point third quarter.

Robertson’s versatility certainly caught the attention of his head coach, Bryan Harsin.

“He’s got great speed,” Harsin said. “He’s a really bright player, great person, takes care of his business. He’s going to continue to keep getting better and better. He’s got a great attitude, he’s always positive.”

Sounds like all the qualities anyone could ask for in a go-to receiver.

Robertson averaged 20.3 yards on his 3 catches on Saturday. That’s a number any quarterback would be happy to rely on. His touchdown run was his only carry of the game but certainly gives opposing defensive coordinators something to be aware of moving forward.

It is evident that Harsin and Nix will lean heavily on a trio of senior receivers this season. In two games so far, Jackson leads the trio with 7 receptions (90 yards, no TDs). Robertson and tight end John Samuel Shenker (46 yards, no TDs) each have 6 catches.

Lest we forget another senior, Sean Shivers, the would-be go-to receiver who did not play on Saturday. Harsin gave no further information on Shivers’ injury or whether he would be available for next Saturday’s game against Penn State in Happy Valley.

Without Shivers, it will be imperative that Robertson continue to step up and find the end zone more, whether he’s on the receiving end of a Nix spiral or using his speed in taking a handoff on a reverse.

Moving forward, Nix would do well to find Robertson in clutch situations that will surely present themselves against a power like Penn State, as well as the gauntlet of an SEC schedule further down the road — certainly as long as Shivers is not in the lineup. But even with him, Robertson could provide a formidable 1-2 punch with Shivers.

Nix could absolutely use the help. Heck, he could use a set of receivers that don’t drop pass after pass as they did on Saturday. After picking apart Akron in the opener, Nix completed just 9 of 17 passes for 107 yards on Saturday, thanks in large part to the slippery hands of his receiving corps.

All the more reason for Robertson to continue to prove that he can be that go-to guy Nix and the Tigers are searching for.
