UPDATE (3:20 p.m.): AL.com’s Brandon Marcello reports that police have made an arrest in the murder of freshman Jakell Mitchell. According to the report, Markale Hart has been charged with murder after the shooting death of Mitchell early Sunday morning.

UPDATE: Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and athletic director Jay Jacobs each released a statement on Sunday regarding Mitchell’s passing.

Malzahn:

“I’m devastated and saddened by the passing of Jakell Mitchell. My thoughts and prayers are with Jakell’s family and friends, who are suffering through this senseless tragedy. I know the Auburn family is hurting, especially our players and coaches, and we are going to love and support them through this difficult time. We have lost a member of our family too young, too soon.”

Jacobs:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell Mitchell’s family and those who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy. This is a very trying time for those close to Jakell, including the student-athletes, coaches, staff and Auburn family. We will provide counseling and support and do everything we can to help them through the grieving process.”

The Tiger Den, the off-campus apartment complex at which Mitchell was shot, also released a statement early Sunday afternoon regarding the incident:

“A shooting occurred early this morning at our community. The Auburn police department and our onsite security officer responded to the incident. That shooting resulted in the death of Jakell Mitchell. We are cooperating fully with police as they investigate this matter.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell Mitchell’s family, friends and the entire Auburn University community. When tragedies such as these occur, everyone is effected, and we all mourn his loss.

“Your well being is of utmost importance to us. A courtesy officer lives onsite and is available to you 24/7. We also have a security officer onsite in the evenings.

“If you have any questions regarding this morning’s incident, we encourage you to call or stop by the front office. This is an ongoing police investigation, but we will be monitoring the situation and do our best to keep you updated.”

Tragic news broke out of Auburn early Sunday morning when Brandon Marcello of AL.com reported that Auburn Tigers freshman Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed at an apartment complex near the Auburn campus.

According to the Auburn police department, officers responded to an incident at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex around 12:25 a.m. and rushed Mitchell to a nearby hospital.

Mitchell, who played H-back and tight end, was pronunced dead shortly after arriving at the emergency room due to multiple gunshot wounds. Auburn police are officially treating his death as a homicide, per AL.com’s report.

On the football field, Mitchell took a redshirt in 2014 was in line to make significant contributions next year.

The Auburn police is asking anyone with information that may help in its investigation to contact them as police have still not located a suspect in the shooting.
