Auburn may have landed its quarterback of the future Wednesday when the Tigers beat out a number of high-profile teams to score a commitment from Woody Barrett.

A four-star prospect and the nation’s sixth-ranked dual-threat quarterback for 2016 according to the 247Sports composite ranking, Barrett pledged his services to coach Gus Malzahn and Auburn.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound quarterback from suburban Orlando, Fla., runs a 4.55-second 40-yard dash, according to 247Sports. He completed 61 percent of his passes and rushed for 813 yards as a junior in 2014.

“Auburn runs a system kind of like we do,” Barrett said, according to 247Sports. “Coach Gus (Malzahn) knows that. It’s his own offense. I feel I can go there and be the next Cam Newton.

“I’m still working on my leadership but Auburn is getting a leader, a guy that can run a high-tempo offense and someone they can rely on when it’s fourth down and 15. I’m a QB that can get first downs and I have a strong arm.”

Barrett’s West Orange High School coach told AL.com that the quarterback has not yet qualified academically, but it’s still early on that front.

“He’s got a really big body and great frame,” West Orange coach Bob Head told AL.com.

“He doesn’t have any fat on him. He reminds me of a Steve McNair or Vince Young type-body, (but) he looks like a linebacker. He’s really naturally strong and runs the ball like a running back. We’re working on his accuracy, but he’s really tough and plays with a reckless abandon and it brings the best out of his natural instincts. He’s very dynamic.”

Barrett’s pledge adds to what’s shaping up to be the most touted class of incoming SEC quarterbacks in many years. Jacob Eason (Georgia), Feleipe Franks (LSU) and Shea Patterson (Ole Miss) all rank in the top two among pro-style or dual-threat quarterbacks. Jarrett Guarantano (Tennessee) and Brandon McIlwain (South Carolina) are regarded four-star talents.

Auburn now has seven commitments within the team’s 2016 class.
