Anyone who just looked at the final score of Auburn’s 63-9 win over Alabama State on Saturday wouldn’t have seen anything wrong.

A closer look at the stat sheet shows the Tigers had their fair share of issues with ball security since they fumbled the ball away four times.

Ja’Tavarious “Boobie” Whitlow fumbled on Auburn’s second drive of the game.

“Nobody felt worse about it than Boobie for sure,” Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey told reporters Sunday night. “Really, the safety came in from across the field and really put the hat right on the ball, but at the end of the day we’ve got to make sure we protect it.”

Asa Martin, Matthew Hill and Griffin King were also culprits in the second half. Quarterback Jarett Stidham also fumbled twice in the season opener.

“Backs here at Auburn have done a great job protecting the ball with the great ones that have played here,” Lindsey said. “Boobie and I had a great conversation about that if you want to be really good down the road, you’ve got to make sure that’s not something that happens a lot. We’ve got to make sure we do a better job of that. He’s still a young player, he’ll continue to improve and I know that will be a point of emphisis for him too.”

Luckily for the Tigers, the talent gap between them and Alabama State was wide enough that the turnovers didn’t really matter. Whitlow and Shaun Shivers each had more than 100 yards rushing.

It’s an issue they’ll have to fix soon because No. 12 LSU won’t allow the Tigers to be so fortunate.
