This is certainly an unfortunate situation.

Auburn preferred walk-on C.J. Harris was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for the use of cannabis oil, according to WXGA-TV. Following his 14th seizure, Harris was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was a sophomore in high school, and cannabis oil is the only thing that has kept his epilepsy at bay.

NCAA athletes aren’t permitted to have any tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in their systems, and cannabis oil has less than 0.3 percent, per the label. Even at that level, though, Harris wouldn’t be able to pass an NCAA drug test.

It’s unfortunate because Harris had the opportunity to walk on at Auburn, his dream school, and that dream has unfortunately been taken away.

“When I read the text that one of the coaches sent me, I just, I broke down,” Harris told WXGA_TV. “Because this is my dream, and I saw everything lining up perfectly for me.”

Harris is looking into playing at JUCO or an NAIA program; however, it appears like he’ll need to find a new medicine or give up playing football.

“You’re taking something away from a kid who’s worked so hard in his life to get there,” his father, Curtis, said. “And you’re just taking it away because he’s taking a medication that’s helping with his disability.”
