Update: Auburn confirmed the hire of Travaris Robinson on Saturday afternoon.

Robinson will coach the cornerbacks for the Tigers.  “Auburn has provided me so many opportunities and I’m excited to be able to give back to a place that has meant so much to me.,” Robinson said in a statement. “I have a lot of respect for coach Malzahn and I’m looking forward to working for him. My family and I are glad to be back home. War Eagle!”

Said head coach Gus Malzahn: “Travaris is one of the nation’s best young coaches and recruiters, who is very familiar with Auburn and the Southeastern Conference. He was an outstanding player at Auburn and will be a tremendous asset for our staff and players. We’re excited to have Travaris back at Auburn.”

Former Florida head coach Will Muschamp is bringing one of his former assistant with him to help coach his new defense at Auburn University.

According to a report by Sports Illustrated’s Thayer Evans, citing a source, Florida defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson will rejoin Muschamp on the plains to coach the Tigers secondary beginning next season. The move is a homecoming of sorts for Robinson, who played safety at Auburn from 1999-2002.

After a brief two-year stint in the NFL, Robinson returned to Auburn in 2004 as a graduate assistant, and later went on to coach the secondaries at Western Kentucky, Southern Miss and Texas Tech.

He arrived at Florida in 2011 when Muschamp took over as head coach, and he spent the last four seasons leading the Gators defensive backs. According to Evans’ report, Auburn’s current defensive backs coach, Melvin Smith, will not be retained in that role next year.

Florida’s defense ranked 23rd in the FBS in pass defense entering Saturday’s victory over East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl. Auburn’s defense ranked 67th in the FBS against the pass in 2014.
