Auburn took Georgia down to the wire on Saturday and had a final drive to either tie or take the lead in the game with less than 2 minutes to play.

The Tigers ultimately fell short, losing the ball on an interception and missing out on taking the No. 1 team to overtime or even beating them. Had Auburn scored on its final drive, Hugh Freeze knew what his strategy would have been.

While the analytics would have told him to try and win it there, Freeze knew that Georgia’s front likely would have gotten the stop, so he was planning on kicking the extra point.

“You look at the chart as soon as you get that last possession and it did say go for 2,” Freeze said at the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. “I’m not sure that we would have, but that’s what the analytics said. I probably would’ve kicked the extra point, cause we had struggled in short yardage against them. Their front’s pretty talented. So we probably would’ve taken it to overtime.”

Despite the loss, it was an encouraging performance from Auburn and a sign of what they can do moving forward. The Tigers will get a chance to relax with the bye week this week before getting back in action against LSU the following week.
