Hugh Freeze and Auburn will look to pull off a stunning upset when they host Alabama on Saturday, but that would be nothing new for this rivalry. The Crimson Tide have lost as a ranked favorite in Jordan-Hare Stadium three out of the past 5 times they have ventured to The Plains.

Former Auburn coach and current UCF head man Gus Malzahn orchestrated a handful of those upsets, and he talked to current Tiger coach Hugh Freeze about what this rivalry means earlier this week.

In at attempt to relate more to Freeze, Malzahn referenced the in-state rivalry series that he was a part of as head coach at Ole Miss.

“I know you’ve been part of a big one across the state line (The Egg Bowl), but this one here’s another level,” Malzahn told Freeze.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State have actually met more on the football field than Auburn and Alabama have, with the Egg Bowl taking place 119 times to the Iron Bowl’s 87. But, while both series are filled with passion and bad blood, it is hard to top the vice grip that the Iron Bowl holds over the state of Alabama for 365 days.

The Crimson Tide and Tigers are set to square off at 3:30 ET on CBS this Saturday.
