Auburn’s streak of 12 consecutive games scoring at least 30 points was snapped Thursday night in Manhattan, Kan. in its 20-14 win over Kansas State.

The defense stepped up all night while the offense struggled to find its rhythm, a rarity for the Tigers under Gus Malzahn.

Let’s grade their performance in each phase of the game:

Offense: C-

It was a sloppy performance from the Auburn offense. The Tigers streak of 13 straight games with at least 200 rushing yards was snapped, as the Tigers rushing attack was held at bay all night by a very fundamentally sound Wildcat defense. Nick Marshall struggled at times to throw ball, though he finished a very quiet 17-of-31 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall had seven incompletions that should’ve gone the other, four of which were drops and three missed throws to open receivers on the part of Marshall.

DefenseA-

Ellis Johnson has to be happy with his unit’s performance Thursday night. The Tigers allowed just 40 rushing yards on 30 carries, and forced three turnovers that proved to be important. Linebacker Kris Frost played very well registering six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble while safety Josh Holsey, who replaced the suspended Jermaine Whitehead, led all tacklers with 11 stops.

Special Teams: B

A rugby-style punt from newcomer Matt Schiel averted a near disaster on the Tigers opening drive after Schiel dropped the snap. Daniel Carlson made both of his field goals that would prove important as points were at a premium on Thursday night. Special teams coverage struggled, though, against Tyler Lockett who had a couple long returns that nearly broke loose.
