Bill Oliver was a longtime assistant coach and coordinator at Alabama and Auburn, and ended his coaching career in 1998 with a five-game stint as Auburn’s interim head coach following the resignation of former Tigers’ coach Terry Bowden. Oliver closed the ’98 season with a 2-3 record, including an 0-3 record against SEC foes. He was considered a candidate to assume the head coaching job full-time following the season, but when Auburn chose Tommy Tuberville for the job Oliver chose to retire from coaching. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
He served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator under Bowden from 1996-1998, and spent stints as Alabama’s defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator in the early 90’s. His only other head coaching experience came with the Chattanooga Mocs of the Division I-AA ranks from 1980-1983. Oliver’s teams were 29-14-1 in those seasons.
