Charles Shira began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Tennessee Volunteers in 1951, and would go on to serve two stints as an assistant at Mississippi State before taking over as head coach at MSU in 1967. Shira led the Bulldogs’ program for six forgettable seasons from 1967-1972. He posted just one winning season in that time – a 6-5 mark in 1970 – and was named SEC Coach of the Year at season’s end. His other five MSU teams each lost at least seven games, and Shira was let go following the 1972 season with a combined record of 16-45-2 with the Bulldogs. He tragically passed away in 1976 at the age of 49.
