George Petrie was the first-ever football coach at Auburn University, coaching the Tigers through their first season in 1892. Petrie led Auburn to a 2-2 record but never coached again at the college level after that. He passed away in 1947 at the age of 81.
A former newspaper reporter who has roamed the southeastern United States for years covering football and eating way too many barbecue ribs, if there is such a thing.
