Rutledge spent his first three years at Vanderbilt coaching the quarterbacks and the wide receivers. In 1998 he became solely responsible for the Commodores signal-callers working first working with freshman Greg Zolman and David Wallace. Zolman was named the starter in 1999 and held the spot through his senior season. As a player, Rutledge quarterbacked Alabama to the 1978 national championship. He was a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide.
