W. M. Matthews was the first-ever football coach in the history of the Mississippi A&M football program (a.k.a. Mississippi State). He coached the team through its inaugural season in 1895, losing both its games on the season against Union College and the Memphis Athletic Club without scoring a single point. Matthews left coaching after the 0-2 season.
A former newspaper reporter who has roamed the southeastern United States for years covering football and eating way too many barbecue ribs, if there is such a thing.
