Sacramento State’s Matt Masciangelo has had a tough start to the 2024 season.

Masciangelo has already been hit by a pitch 8 times — in just 9 plate appearances — so far on the young season. His latest hit-by-pitch came on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against Loyola Marymount.

Here’s video of the most recent hit-by-pitch:

That was Masciangelo’s first plate appearance of the day on Sunday, so it’s possible he could be hit again before the day is up. LMU pitchers hit 11 batters over the first 2 games of this series this weekend.

Masciangelo was hit an astounding 7 times over Sacramento State’s first two games. He posted an on-base percentage of .875 over the double-header.

By all accounts, Masciangelo has handled this weekend well. He spoke with MLB.com about the experience on Saturday.

“After the third HBP in the first game, I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation,” Masciangelo said. “It’s not every day you find yourself trotting to first base, multiple times, without swinging. I guess it was after that moment I realized this was completely ludicrous. I had four more balls unfortunately find me after that, but hey, I’ll take the on-base-percentage bump.”

Masciangelo walked just one time in 20 games last year playing for Cal State Bakersfield. He transferred to Sacramento State this offseason.
