The Big 12 may be getting even bigger than initially expected.

On Friday, the Big 12 extended membership invitations to BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston. Those moves came after Oklahoma and Texas decided both would be leaving the conference to join the SEC.

However, the Big 12 could still be looking to bring in more schools in addition to the 4 it already added.

According to Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, Boise State and Memphis are “among the schools being discussed” to be included in a second round of expansion for the Big 12. But Dodd noted that it’s unlikely any more schools will be added until after 2024.

BYU is joining the Big 12 in 2023, then UCF, Cincinnati and Houston will be in no later than July 1, 2024. Once that happens, there will be 12 schools in the conference.

So if the Big 12 decides to further expand, it could potentially feature 14 schools or even more.

These moves have all been necessary, considering the Big 12 was going to drop to 8 teams if it lost Oklahoma and Texas and didn’t replace either. Now, it seems the conference will be in much better shape moving forward.
