Austin Peay defensive back Jeremiah Collins, a freshman preparing for his first season in college football, passed away at age 18 Friday night following a single-car crash near the university campus.
According to a Metro Nashville Police report, Collins was driving a GMC pickup truck at a high rate of speed while taking an exit, causing the car to swerve off the road and roll several times. Collins was taken to Skyline Medical Center and later pronounced dead.
The former 3-star recruit attended Oakland high school in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, just south of Nashville and about 75 miles southeast of Clarksville, where Austin Peay is located. The Patriots have long boasted one of the top high school football programs in the state.
Collins was a member of Oakland’s 2022 TSSAA 6A State Championship team. He is originally from Louisville, Kentucky and was committed to the Cardinals program before de-committing.
