Colt Brennan tragically died earlier this year, and now, the sad news of his cause of death has been revealed.

TMZ Sports is reporting that the toxicology report on Brennan’s death revealed that he died from an accidental overdose.

The former quarterback, who had been struggling with substance abuse for years, had a combination of fentanyl, methamphetamine, amphetamine, and ethanol in his system when he died.

This is a sad ending to a tragic story.

It’s unknown whether he was prescribed the drugs or taking them on his own. At the time of his death, Brennan was in a drug rehab facility in Southern California when he was rushed to the hospital for a medical emergency. Soon thereafter, however, he died at the age of 37.

Brennan was drafted in the 6th round of the NFL Draft by Washington in 2008 before moving onto Oakland and then the Canadian Football League.

Brennan started out at the University of Colorado before eventually ending up at the University of Hawaii where he broke or tied 11 school passing records. The following year in 2006, he lead the nation in scoring and passing efficiency and finished sixth in the Heisman voting.
