Deion Sanders and Shedeur Sanders are hoping to turn things around at Colorado after a 4-8 season. However, Coach Prime’s methods at Colorado have been questioned a bit recently, and one specific piece led to quite the stir on social media.

Xavier Smith, a former defensive back for Colorado, recently shared part of his story with “The Athletic.” According to Smith, Coach Prime told the player he should enter the transfer portal, something that bothered Smith so early in Sanders’ tenure.

“We sat on the sofa, and he’s talking to us, but he’s not even looking at us,” Smith said. “I’m looking Coach Kelly dead in his eyes. (Sanders) said he felt like I should hit the portal. He didn’t want me to waste a year thinking I could earn a spot.

“I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me.”

By now, the exodus from Colorado during Sanders’ first spring with the program is legendary. However, the story involving Smith (and many of the other former Buffs who left the program) struck a nerve with Shedeur.

The quarterback responded to the story on social media, saying he didn’t “even remember him.” Sanders also referred to Smith as likely to be “very mid at best.”

That may have been the end of the story if not for someone bringing up the incident in a comment directed at Coach Prime Wednesday morning. In reply to someone urging Deion to tell his son to cool it, Deion simply said that Shedeur will be a top 5 pick in next year’s draft and questioned where the commenter’s son is going.

He also responded to a verbal back-and-forth involving a current Colorado player.

To little surprise, those kind of interactions from Coach Prime and Shedeur lit up social media. Many chimed in at the bravado, particularly for a head coach, QB and program coming off a 4-8 season and still experiencing significant turnover in the transfer portal.
