There was more than one reason for Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith stepping down from the College Football Playoff selection committee earlier this year.

Smith was helping with the Buckeyes’ coaching transition, as Ryan Day was taking over and becoming a first-time head coach. They had previously been led by longtime coach Urban Meyer.

But Smith was also not pleased with a decision the CFP made last season — ranking two-loss Georgia ahead of one-loss Ohio State.

“I stepped down to be here for more of Ryan Day, to support him, but I was also concerned about how the committee was applying the criteria,” Smith said, according to Griffin Strom of The Lantern. “And so I felt uncomfortable when I came back into the room after I had been recused and Georgia was ranked ahead of us. They were a two-loss team, not a champion.”

Neither school made the College Football Playoff last season, as Georgia was placed No. 5 in the final rankings with Ohio State right behind it at No. 6. However, the Bulldogs had lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game while the Buckeyes had won the Big Ten title.

If Smith was still on the CFP selection committee this season, he wouldn’t have any issues with its most recent rankings. Ohio State took over the No. 1 spot this week after its big win over Penn State this past weekend.

The Buckeyes also appear to be well on their way to making the Playoff for the first time since the 2016 season.
