Elway was the greatest NFL qb of all time. He carried average teams for most of his career. No individual player has ever accomplished the things that John Elway did. (as for that 'talented team'...when John retired, they began the next season 0-4)...If people understood who this man was, they'd be calling Michael Jordon the Elway of the NBA...
Elway was always a winner. He never won a CHAMPIONSHIP until he got a better quality team, but he dragged mediocre teams to the Super Bowl 3 times in 4 years back in his prime...Look it up...that's never been done, before or since. NOBODY won like John Elway....he won Super Bowls when his team was good enough, but he came very close even when it WASN'T...His 3 losses in the 80's is the ultimate individual achievement, and nobody...not Montana, not Brady, not Bradshaw, not Unitas, not Starr...ever came close to matching this...Those 80's Broncos teams had no legitimate Hall of Famers other than Elway...and they only had one or two legitimate PRO BOWLERS!!!(Atwater and Smith)....Compare that to other teams who got to the big game and lost over and over...Buffalo and Minnesota, in particular...they were LOADED with Hall of Fame talent and Pro Bowlers...Elway took his team there ON HIS BACK...the closest thing there's ever been to a one man team in NFL history...
Well said. The point of a game is to WIN....not to compile stats. There were several unconventional qbs through the years who were authentic, natural football players...Flutie, for example, or Garcia...who would never be confused with Elway or Marino for arm talent, but who were capable of winning a good percentage of their games...Tebow had a lot of the same quality...an instinct for the game, a quality that cannot be coached...and a quality that is not dependent on constantly having every variable go your way, either, like the style that is championed by so many of our recent 'Hall of Famers'...
Elway is the greatest quarterback of all time. But I DO think that he felt a degree of jealousy towards Tebow, for one reason...Manning was a Hall of Famer, but he was NEVER a hero. Tebow WAS...Manning had no chance of ever taking Elway's place in the hearts of Bronco fans...but Tebow had some of that same magic...the raw instincts for the game that Elway demonstrated during his NFL career...Peyton Manning turned the game into a geekfest, with his prissiness and softness and falling into the fetal position all the time...but like him or not, Tebow played a man's game, like Elway...He didn't have Elway's arm, or anything approaching it, but he DID have Elway's unique blend of machismo and instincts...and Elway KNEW it...Manning was all about qb ratings...Elway was about brass balls...and Tebow was, in many ways, the same kind of guy.
