I'd be in favor of a 6 team field where the 3 plays the 6 seed and 4 plays 5. then the winner of 3/6 and 4/5 play the 2 and 1 seeds, respectively. So this year it would have been Penn State vs Washington and Michigan vs Ohio state. Clemson and Alabama get byes. It would end up being Washington vs Alabama and Michigan vs Clemson. Alabama would end up playing Clemson again.
