Dan Mullen understands what he saw out of new starting quarterback Emory Jones on Saturday, but he’s encouraged by the veteran’s demeanor.

Jones last week against Florida Atlantic was 17-for-27 passing for 113 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions. He also ran 10 times for 74 yards. On the SEC coaches media teleconference on Wednesday, Mullen shared his evaluation of Jones.

“Emory, as he looks at it, he’s been around for a while and is a mature guy,” Mullen said. “Overall, he played pretty well last Saturday. he made some errors he’s not used to making and I don’t know if trying to do too much is the word. I’m trying to be to perfect, too exact, trying to do a million different things on the field instead of trusting your technique, you’re fundamentals and doing what you’re supposed to do.”

Having the knowledge to figure out where to go next is what Mullen is looking for out of Jones.

“… They play good or they play bad,” he said. “Either way, it’s the understanding of what you did well or what you did poorly and how to improve on it. … What you want is guys who understand that. … When you understand those things, you have a chance to make your improvement a lot better. … He understands it and you can make improvements at that point.”
