DJ Lagway has made it official. The 5-star quarterback is taking his talents to Gainesville.

Lagway has been verbally committed to Florida since Dec. 7, 2022. Wednesday, though, was his first chance to sign with the Gators. Like other high-profile recruitments, there was some last-minute drama.

Texas A&M, USC, Clemson and Houston were all reported to have kept recruiting the elite quarterback out of Willis, Texas. Multiple outlets reported that USC coach Lincoln Riley was on the phone with Lagway trying to change the QB’s mind ahead of his signing ceremony.

Lagway allowed Gator fans to exhale when he appeared on ESPN2 and reaffirmed his plans to join Billy Napier’s program, confirming he sent in his National Letter of Intent. Soon after, Florida publicly announced Lagway as a signee.

“I definitely sent it in, I just can’t wait to be a Gator. I can’t wait to be coached by Coach Billy Napier, so I’m excited,” Lagway said on ESPN2.

Lagway was named the National Player of the Year by MaxPreps. A highlight machine in 2023, Lagway led Willis to its best season in program history, notching a 12-1 mark. Lagway completed 72.1% of his passes for 4,631 yards and 58 touchdowns, breaking the Texas Class 6A single-season record for TD passes. A true dual-threat, Lagway also rushed for 975 yards and 15 scores.
