DJ Lagway is the crowning jewel of Florida’s 2024 recruiting class. He has been expected to sign with Billy Napier’s program Wednesday afternoon, but it looks like the Gators will have to sweat things out a bit longer.

As of 2:20 pm ET, Steve Wiltfong with 247 Sports reports USC head coach Lincoln Riley is still in contact with the 5-star quarterback. According to Lagway’s father, Riley and his son had a Wednesday afternoon conversation.

“He just told me he got off the phone with him,” Lagway’s father Derek said. “I thought he was done with that. I guess he saw he hadn’t signed yet so I guess he’ll keep calling I guess.”

While that news could set off additional panic at Florida, DJ’s father still believes his son will choose the Gators:

“I’m thinking it’s Florida,” the elder Lagway said. “He left out of here and that’s what he’s saying. He was on the phone with Coach Riley and he’s going to get a haircut. I’m just telling you what I’m getting from him. I told him whatever he goes with, I’m going to support him.”

The importance of Lagway cannot be overstated. The 6-foot-2 and 225-pound QB out of Willis (Tx) High School is a 5-star prospect, the No. 10 player in the cycle and the No. 3 QB available per the 247 Sports Composite.

Keeping Lagway also gained additional importance with Florida losing commitments from 4-star linebacker Adarius Hayes and 4-star defensive lineman Amaris Williams. Defensive lineman LJ McCray, another 5-star prospect, is also no longer expected to sign his NLI on Wednesday.
