Former Florida kicker Eddy Piñeiro will be sidelined to start the 2020 NFL season. The Chicago Bears announced Tuesday that Piñeiro has been placed on injured reserve due to a groin injury.

Injured reserve policies have been amended by the NFL for 2020 due to COVID-19. Piñeiro can be brought back to the Bears active roster after missing three games. The earliest will be eligible to play again is Oct. 4 when Chicago takes on the Indianapolis Colts.

The injury bug caused Piñeiro to miss his rookie season, as he spent 2018 on injured reserve with the then-Oakland Raiders. He was traded to Chicago ahead of the 2019 season. With the Bears, Piñeiro made 23 of 28 field goals last year.

Piñeiro was a Florida fan favorite when he played for the Gators in 2016 and ’17 before leaving for the NFL.
