The Gainesville Super Regional is underway with Florida and South Carolina squaring off in Game 1 Friday evening. That SEC matchup lived up to the hype with the Gators eventually hanging on for a 5-4 win to open the series.

While Friday’s game was also dramatic, fan attendance between the Gator and Gamecock fanbases combined to set a record. The official attendance for Game 1 was announced as 8,439 fans.

That makes Friday’s attendance in Gainesville the largest crowd ever for an on-campus college baseball game in the state of Florida:

That is impressive by itself, but it is made even more impressive considering the fans had to hang on through a lengthy weather delay before first pitch. Hopefully, weather conditions are clearer for Saturday’s matchup, and we’ll see if the fans can make a run at the record from Friday.

Saturday’s game between Florida and South Carolina is set for 3 pm ET with the broadcast on ESPN2.
