Greg McElroy has taken on fan expectations for a variety of schools, and Florida came on his radar.

The premise is that Gator fans enjoyed the championship success under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer, and expect the program to return to those levels. On top of that, Georgia and Tennessee are enjoying national championship success, and on the upswing overall as a program. Now Oklahoma and Texas are on their way to make it even tougher.

“They’re going to be good again, everything is cyclical,” McElroy said of the Gators. “I just don’t think it’s going to be this year. With all due respect to the Florida Gators and what they bring back. There’s still question marks. You’re still figuring things out on defense.”

McElroy also said the roster and depth is not at a championship caliber. The schedule also isn’t easy, starting with at Utah and then challenging divisional games ahead of the rival game against Florida State, which is expected to enter the season ranked in the top 10.

“I think Florida this year is in for a tough, tough season,” McElroy said. “But what I would say about Billy is Billy Napier is going to build it, I really believe that. I’m not lying to you, I believe that he can build it. But I think Florida fans need to acknowledge that things are not always going to look the way they looked under Urban Meyer and Steve Spurrier.”

McElroy also noted that Florida fans were disgruntled the last time they made the SEC Championship Game because the Gators didn’t score enough points leading to the game.
