Here’s some quick thoughts on Florida’s 24-19 loss to Florida State.

What it means: The Gators showed some heart tonight in their loss to the Seminoles. They couldn’t give Will Muschamp that magic upset win to cap his career at Florida, but it was a valiant effort from a team that was outmatched. As always, the defense was the unit that led the Gators and the offense failed to score enough touchdowns. Even so, the Gators took the No. 3 ranked team to the very end of the game and should provide a good foundation heading into the bowl game.

What I liked: Interceptions by Florida. The Gators’ defensive backs were more than ready to play against Jameis Winston and FSU’s passing attack. Three interceptions in the first quarter alone, it was tough for Winston to establish too much of a rhythm with the exception of the two touchdowns in the second quarter. Four interceptions was a career-high for Winston and a huge credit to the play of the UF secondary.

What I didn’t like: Missed opportunities. Despite picking Winston off four times during the game, the Gators could never capitalize with a touchdown off the turnovers. FSU even returned a pick-six in one play following the Gators’ third interception. Despite the missed opportunities, Florida kept it close all game. But if the Gators capitalize on even one of those turnovers with a touchdown instead of a FG, it’s likely a Florida victory.

Who’s the man: UF secondary. Tough to pick just one player out of the secondary, especially with three different players intercepting a pass. The unit as a whole arguably played one of its best games of the season. The secondary had trouble guarding Nick O’Leary at times, but it kept Florida in the game and gave the Gators several opportunities to extend their lead on the Seminoles early.

Key play: On 4th and 10 with under two minutes left in the game, Treon Harris threw a deep ball to a wide-open Demarcus Robinson in FSU territory, but threw it behind him. Robinson dropped the ball and effectively ended any shot the Gators had of winning the game

What’s next: The Gators are done until bowl season and will find out which bowl game they’re playing in next Sunday afternoon.
