The saga surrounding the transfer of former Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire took another turn on Friday.

Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com reports that Zaire is down to two teams, Texas and an unnamed school.

Richardson had previously reported that the announcement could come today, and that would likely eliminate Florida. For Zaire to join the Gators, the SEC would have to alter its policy for graduate transfers. Under current conference rules, Florida is not allowed to accept a graduate transfer this offseason due to two transfers failing to meet academic requirements in 2015. The rule is expected to be addressed at the upcoming SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla.

If Florida is the “mystery” school – he has also reportedly considered Wisconsin and Harvard – the question becomes when Zaire will make his decision.

Coach Jim McElwain recently told reporters before a speaking engagement in Clearwater, Fla. that the team’s scholarship quarterbacks have not asked him about the Zaire situation and the reported mutual interest between the two parties.

“And yet everybody on our team knows we’re going to continue to do whatever we can to get good players in here, at whatever positions they are,” McElwain said. “Here’s the beauty of it: When you’ve got competition at positions, then you’ve got a pretty good team.”

The Gators are expected to have at least five scholarship quarterbacks on roster this fall (Jake Allen, Luke Del Rio, Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask and Kadarius Toney). While Florida has a number of available arms, Zaire would be the most experienced college quarterback on the roster if he transferred to UF, having played in 17 games (58-of-98 passing, 816 yards, 6 TD; 72 carries, 324 yards, 2 TD).
