ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith typically has no trouble stirring up attention, but it’s typically not with a pronunciation of a player’s name.

But that changed when he attempted to say La’Mical Perine’s name while discussing the former Florida running back and current New York Jet.

“Forgive me if I don’t pronounce the name correctly, I’m just reading, I don’t know, I apologize if I don’t pronounce it correctly,” Smith said before utterly butchering the pronunciation. Of course, Florida’s Twitter account pounced at the chance to troll Smith.

Perine last season rushed for 232 yards on 64 attempts with 2 touchdowns. He also caught 11 passes for 63 yards, and he had 2 kickoff returns for 22 yards.

Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur offered a scouting report on Perine to the Jets team site.

“You’ve got a powerful guy who’s finally seeing what NFL football and running the ball is like,” he said. “He got his feet wet last year and we expect some big things out of him.”
