Brock Bowers is a likely lock as a first-round pick in this year’s draft, and Joel Klatt is pushing Bowers into the top 5 of his first mock draft.

Klatt’s 1.0 mock draft coming out of the Super Bowl was released on Wednesday, and, much like other analysts, he sees a run at quarterbacks to begin the draft. After Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels come off the board, Klatt also has Marvin Harrison Jr. as the first non-QB selected.

Then, Klatt is projecting Bowers to the Los Angeles Chargers and new head coach Jim Harbaugh at No. 5 overall. Bowers is widely regarded as the best TE and a versatile contributor on offense, but coming off the board in the top 5 is higher than most other mock drafts at this point in the process.

Klatt’s reasoning boils down to Harbaugh’s offensive philosophy throughout the years:

“I just start looking at the board here and I just start thinking to myself: Knowing what I know about Jim Harbaugh and knowing what I know about his philosophy, the way he likes to play offense and all the offenses he’s had, dating back to Stanford and then with the 49ers and the obviously with Michigan,” Klatt explained. “What did they always have? A versatile group of TEs. Brock Bowers to the Chargers.”

At DraftKings, Bowers is listed at +2500 to be the first non-QB selected. It’s unlikely Bowers can top Harrison or the top offensive tackles in Olu Fashanu and Joe Alt in those odds, but fans can track all the NFL Draft odds and movement with SDS’s mobile sports betting app.

Klatt acknowledged some might point to Harbaugh’s desire to want more bruising tight ends than Bowers, but the analyst countered that by pointing out Harbaugh wants to use multiple TEs. That would force defenses to go big and then utilize players like Bowers to stretch the defense.

“(Harbaugh) wants to put 2 or 3 TEs on the field, and then have the ability to be in that big personnel group, force the defense to also get big and then try to hurt you with that flex-style pass tight end which is exactly what Bowers is,” claimed Klatt. “So to me, Bowers fits Jim Harbaugh perfectly and what the Chargers will be trying to do under that philosophy. I love that pick.”

Bowers burst onto the scene with a dramatic freshman season, scoring 14 total touchdowns with 882 receiving yards. Throughout his career, Bowers produced 26 receiving touchdowns, 5 rushing touchdowns and over 2,500 receiving yards while being used a variety of ways in Athens.
