After leading the nation’s top defense, Dan Lanning has been extended by Georgia. The news comes from Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, who received Lanning’s new contract via an open records request.

Lanning, 34, is now extended one more year through the 2022 season, according to the report, which also notes that Lanning received a raise of $500,000 in March, bringing his annual salary to $1.25 million.

Lanning was promoted from outside linebackers coach to defensive coordinator for the 2019 season following Mel Tucker’s departure. In Lanning’s first season as defensive coordinator, Georgia allowed only 12.6 points per game and 74.6 rushing yards per game, leading the nation in each category. The team was also No. 3 in total defense, allowing just 275.7 yards per game.

Per Wiszer, Lanning’s extension went into effect on Dec. 10, 2019 and the contract runs through June 30, 2023. He originally joined Kirby Smart’s staff in 2018 after previously serving as inside linebackers coach at Memphis.
