Kirby Smart took the words right from Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff.

Georgia fell to Alabama Saturday, 27-24 to an Alabama team that has completely changed their game from the start of the season to now.

The Bulldogs enter Selection Sunday with just 1 loss on the season in the SEC Championship game. But because of the strong play around the SEC this season it seems more likely than not that the Bulldogs miss out on the 4-team field.

Smart lobbied for both Alabama and Georgia to crack the field on Sunday, however.

“Bill Hancock said, it’s not the most deserving, it’s the best 4 teams,” Smart said Saturday. “If that ain’t the best 4 teams out there, I don’t believe any man or woman sitting on that committee doesn’t believe that that’s not one of the best teams that was No. 1 coming into it.”

The path for both teams to make the playoff is shaky at best. The Committee would have to leave out a Texas team that won the Big 12 and beat Alabama. And that’s assuming Florida State loses to Louisville. If not, the Seminoles will be 13-0 and ACC champions compared with Georgia, 12-1 with no title.

But that’s the root of Smart’s argument, is it not? Ultimately, it’s in the committee’s hands now.
