Georgia head coach Kirby Smart — unsurprisingly — has had some positive things to say about new Bulldogs quarterback signee Justin Fields.

Fields put pen to paper on Wednesday, the first day of the first-ever Early Signing Period, and officially pledged his commitment to UGA. He had been verbally committed since Oct. 6.

Fields is a 5-star prospect and is rated as the nation’s No. 2 overall player, according to the 247Sports Composite.

“He was one of the Alpha Dogs of the Alpha Dogs,” Smart told reporters at a press conference, a Dawgs247 report indicated. “He took over The Opening. He won a lot of games. He made throws. And he did it all while keeping a calm, cool, presence that is kind of unmatched. He’s never real high, never real low. He’s really exciting. He can win the game with his feet but he can win the game with his arm.”

To be rated as the nation’s best dual-threat quarterback, a player must have some special qualities. Fields undoubtedly checks all the boxes.

Smart hopes that translates to him pushing the current quarterbacks on Georgia’s roster.

“There’s only so many guys like Justin Fields,” Smart said. “That’s a talented young man. And so is Jake Fromm. And I’ll bet you anything that Justin Fields makes Jake Fromm better, and Jake Fromm makes Justin Fields better. And Jacob Eason makes both those guys better. So you start looking at the dynamic, competition breeds success.”
