Georgia has been without star safety Richard LeCounte for over a week, after the defensive back was injured in a motorcycle accident following the Bulldogs’ win over Kentucky.

Head coach Kirby Smart provided an update on Tuesday, as reported by The Athletic’s Seth Emerson.

“We’re hopeful on it” said Smart when asked if there is a chance LeCounte comes back to play in 2020. “Depends how long the season is.”

Smart added that he could not put a timetable on LeCounte’s return, but that he has been around the team and at practice.

Georgia’s 10-game slate eases up this week, and down the stretch. The Dawgs play Missouri, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt to round out the 2020 season.

An SEC First Team preseason selection, LeCounte had 26 tackles through 5 games this season. He is also one of 19 players currently tied for the national lead in interceptions with 3.

Heading into his fourth season at Georgia, LeCounte was named to pre-season watch lists for the Bednarik Award (collegiate defensive player of the year), Paycom Jim Thorpe Award (nation’s top DB) and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player).
