Naturally, Justin Fields started trending on Twitter after Jamie Newman opted out of 2020 season
The big news in the SEC on Wednesday came out of Georgia, where Wake Forest graduate transfer QB Jamie Newman officially decided to opt out of the 2020 season amid COVID-19 concerns.
That’s a tough choice each and every player across the country has to make, and Newman had decided to sit out during the pandemic.
However, moving forward, Georgia now needs a new quarterback. USC transfer JT Daniels is eligible to play right away after getting a waiver from the NCAA, but he hasn’t been medically cleared after suffering an injury last year with the Trojans.
Naturally, that led to speculation that Georgia could turn to a familiar face — one that helped lead Ohio State to the College Football Playoff last season. Of course, we’re talking about Justin Fields, who was spotted at Georgia’s scrimmage on Saturday, adding to the intrigue.
Fields started trending on Twitter shortly after the news about Newman broke. Here’s some of the mixed reaction toward Fields potentially heading back to Athens:
Just a reminder…Justin Fields was in Athens and did attend the scrimmage this past weekend. All while his current team isn't allowed to play. Hmmm….

You’re better off believing the Earth is flat than believing Justin Fields is returning to Georgia.

Georgia fans to @justnfields right now:
“Baby come back, any kind of fool could see. There was something in everything about you. Baby come back, you can blame it all on me.
I was wrong, and I just can't live without you”

I don’t want to say it but…… Justin Fields was in Athens last week……. could he…… possibly…… come back?

If Georgia is allowed to have Justin Fields while Cade Mays sits on the sideline I will riot.

The year is 2432.
Georgia is still looking for their first national title since 1980.
Davis Paul has been named Georgia’s starting QB.
Justin Fields starts trending.

Justin Fields transferring back to Georgia would be so funny and so awesome

Justin Fields would have to go through the transfer process, get a waiver, and learn Georgia’s playbook within a 3-week period but, like, please?

Is a Fields-Georgia reunion likely? No. But, is speculating wildly about it fun? Of course it is.
Either way, Georgia needs a new starter, so we’ll see where coach Kirby Smart turns moving forward.
