Georgia head coach Mark Richt spoke to fans, coaches and media members Friday at a clinic held by the Minority Coaches Association of Georgia, and among his many discussion topics was the Bulldogs quarterback competition heading into the fall.

Many view redshirt sophomore Brice Ramsey to be the favorite to win the job after he quarterbacked the Dawgs through the second half of their Belk Bowl win over Louisville, completing 4 of 9 passes for 51 yards (he also threw an interception).

However, contenders like redshirt freshman Jacob Park and redshirt junior Faton Bauta have not been ruled out just yet, and Richt reiterated this point on Friday.

“It’s just a lot of work to be done between now and that first game and a lot of competition to happen,” Richt told the Ledger-Enquirer. “You know, the quarterback position is as wide-open as it’s ever been since I’ve been at Georgia probably. It’s going to be an interesting battle I would say.”

Georgia’s ongoing quarterback battle coincides with the team’s transition from former offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, a member of Richt’s original UGA staff in 2001, to new OC Brian Schottenheimer, who spent the last 14 years coaching in the NFL.

Richt also spoke about losing Bobo and gaining Schottenheimer on Friday.

“Mike did a wonderful job here at Georgia and we appreciate everything he did,” Richt said. “He got a great opportunity to become a head coach at a great university, so we’re proud of him, happy for him. Now it’s a matter of getting acclimated to Coach Schottenheimer, the way he likes to operate. It’s been an exciting time, but certainly we appreciate what Mike did while he was here.

“(Schottenheimer) is a sharp guy, a guy that knows his ball. But he’s also a guy that has the right type of personality to coach the college game, to recruit the college level. We’re just real thankful we got him.”
