Kirby Smart certainly understands what kinds of players it takes to make a splash in the College Football Playoff. The Georgia coach feels like he has one in QB Jake Fromm, and even agreed with a comparison to former Clemson WR Hunter Renfrow.

“Certainly feels like it,” Smart told ESPN’s Chris Low. “He’s a guy that’s been around, played in a lot of football games, played in a lot of big football games. And he’s going into his third year, so he’s going to get an opportunity to play in some more this year.”

Low asked Smart if Fromm’s experience could allow him to make more plays.

“I think he could put us in the right situations,” Smart said. “He’s seen so many things from defenses, not only in our conference, but from us every day in practice that it’s hard to surprise him with things. So he’s got to find a way to get those playmakers the ball, and he usually does that well.”

The one difference is Renfrow began his career at Clemson as a walk-on, and Fromm as a backup QB. But their performances in the College Football Playoff are striking.

Renfrow made 37 receptions and four touchdowns in seven career CFP games. Fromm, who entered to replace an injured Jacob Eason against Appalachian State, and held on to the job as Georgia eventually won the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma when Fromm was 20-of-29 passes with two touchdowns. He enters his third season with 28 starts.
